Spring is knocking at the door, heralding in a unique event in Turin
Spring is knocking at the door, heralding in a unique event in Turin. From April 10th to May 23rd, 2010, the city is returning to the centre of the Christian faith! The famous Shroud of Turin will be returned to display in the Cathedral of Turin, having been restored in 2002. The restoration removed pieces of cloth burnt in the Chambéry fire of 1532, and placed the Shroud on a new stand. The extraordinary image borne by the Holy Shroud arouses profound emotions in the believer and non-believer alike! Don't miss this amazing opportunity to come in person and see the mysterious cloth for yourself. This is a chance that comes up just a few times in every century. Book your stay and your visit to the Holy Shroud now!
Spring is also the best time of year to visit the Royal Residences. During these months, their lush gardens are filled to overflowing with flowers of every sort. The many castles, palaces, houses and villas connected to the Savoy monarchs are sprinkled around the hinterland of Turin, and provide stunning spectacles to be enjoyed by lovers of art, architecture and history. Having been named a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1997, the Royal Residences are of great historic, artistic and environmental interest. In the heart of the city, the very central Royal Palace, the Court Residence, and Madama Palace, the elegant abode of the Royal Ladies, are all magnificent. Nor should one ignore the residences on the outskirts of the city, which were used for pleasure and hunting. These include the Villa della Regina, the magnificent Venaria Reale Castle, summer residence of the Savoy family and today part of an impressive renovation project that also involves its grounds, the Castles of Rivoli, home of the important Museum of Contemporary Art, the Castles of Moncalieri and Agliè and the Hunting Lodge of Stupinigi. Nor should any visitor to the region overlook the Castles of Racconigi, Govone, Pollenzo and La Mandria, which were also involved in agriculture and production.
With the Torino+Piemonte Card, you have your own keys to the Royal Residences and the whole region! Discover the amazing beauties of Turin and Piedmont easily and without breaking the bank with the Card. Priced from only €10, it's available in 2, 3, 5 and 7 day versions, and we also offer a 2-day Junior Card. Visit Prague "In the footsteps of the Luxembourgs"
The Luxembourg Dynasty left traces all over the Czech Republic, and its beautiful castles, palaces and cathedrals are to be found especially in Prague, the Czech capital. Visit them in 2010 to mark the 700th anniversary of the accession of the Luxembourgs to the Czech throne. Start with the first of the Luxembourgs to assume the Czech throne, John of Luxembourg, and move on to his son and successor, Charles IV, the Czech and German king and Holy Roman Emperor, described as the most important European ruler of the late Middle Ages.
The St. Vitus, St. Wenceslas and St. Adalbert Cathedral, the largest and most important Cathedral in Prague, was founded by Charles IV together with his father, John of Luxembourg. John of Luxembourg gave the Old Town freedom to rule itself so, during his reign, construction of The Old Town Hall began. During the reign of Charles IV, many significant buildings were erected in Prague. The Charles Bridge was built, the city fortification was constructed, the Charles University, which ranks among the world's oldest universities, was established and many ecclesiastical buildings, such as the Emauzy monastery, were created.
We recommend that you learn more about the history of the Charles Bridge in the adjacent Charles Bridge Museum. If you like mystery, go to the Old Town Bridge Tower (Staroměstská mostecká věž), where a short film about the astronomical and astrological contexts of the bridge's construction can be seen. Both attractions, along with some fifty more, can be visited for free with your PRAGUE CARD in hand!
If you come in April, enjoy a wonderful Easter holiday in the heart of Prague. There is so much to do and see! Learn about Czech Easter traditions, taste lots of delicacies, and enjoy some proper rest and relaxation. Beautiful Easter markets are held every year in Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square, where stalls with souvenirs and Easter products lure Prague locals and visitors alike from March 20th to April 11th. In addition to shopping, an interesting cultural programme awaits you: spectators will enjoy folkloric performances, folk music and dance in Old Town Square. There will also be a workshop for children, teaching little ones how to braid switches into "pomlázky" (birch rods) and how to dye eggs.
