Explore Dubrovnik, the jewel of the Adriatic.
George Bernard Shaw wrote: "Those who seek paradise on Earth should come and see Dubrovnik". With medieval fortifications, churches, monasteries and palaces, Dubrovnik, a UNESCO site since 1979, is the Pearl of the Adriatic, as Lord Byron said. With more than a thousand years of history, it is a major cultural centre. From a small community, Dubrovnik became the seat of the independent Dubrovnik Republic. With its own fleet and seafaring expertise, it was compared to Venice. Today, you can experience Dubrovnik's history on every street, which combine a rich heritage with dashing contemporary life. The historical city is surrounded by a monumental wall retaining its original appearance and open to visitors. It can be hard to choose what to see, with so many options! You can visit the Museum of Franciscans, with the inventory of the third oldest pharmacy in Europe, founded in 1317. The Cathedral's Treasury glitters with precious works of gold from the 11th to the 19th century. The Museum of the Dominicans contains art from the 15th and 16th centuries, while the Rector's Palace houses art, furniture, porcelain and the inventory of the Domus Christy Pharmacy, from 1420. Our Maritime Museum offers insight into Dubrovnik's maritime history.
But Dubrovnik is not just about the past; our Gallery of Modern Art, among others, hosts Croatian and international work. The Dubrovnik Summer Festival in July and August is a prestigious event when palaces, churches and squares become stages for music, theatre and traditional performances. In September, the Jullian Rachlin & Friends Festival of Chamber Music is held. Medieval fairs and traditional Dalmatian singing can be enjoyed out of doors. We host the Libertas Film Festival in June, and the Festival of Early Music in October. Come in Christmas for markets and carolling, or Carnival for street festivities and masked balls. St Blaise, our Patron Saint, is celebrated in February, and spring also offers the Wedding Festival, Valentine's Day, an Oyster Festival and the Easter Fair. Come to Dubrovnik for fine dining and enjoy recipes from when the world moved at a slower pace. Oysters, naturally cultivated here, are a specialty.
The Dubrovnik Winter Card and Dubrovnik City Card help you to make the best of your stay. The FREE Winter Card offers discounts in shops, restaurants and museums. The Dubrovnik City Card offers enhanced access to cultural sites and a 50% discount to ten primary attractions, including the City Wall, Maritime Museum and the Ethnographic Museum. The daily Dubrovnik City Card costs 100 Croatian Kuna, or about €15-and it saves a bundle! By summer 2010, we will offer a weekly card with special deals to visit even more, including the Jewish Municipality, the Botanic Garden on the island of Lokrum, the Virtual Museum, Aquarium and Museum of Croatian Independence War, as well as public transport.
